On November 3, 2023, our staff gathered at Thurgood Marshall Law School to explore the origins of Lone Star Legal Aid through first-hand accounts of the justice we’ve achieved for our clients since 1948. Distinguished Professor James Douglas is the Distinguished Professor of Law at Thurgood Marshall School of Law (TMSL) at Texas Southern University (TSU). He has also served as Dean of TMSL and President of TSU.

Paul Furrh has been CEO of Lone Star Legal Aid since 2001, and its predecessor, East Texas Legal Services, since 1982.

Jane Swanson joined East Texas Legal Services' Beaumont Branch Office in 1979, where she was counsel of record for In re: Alien Children Education Litigation. 501 F. Supp.544 (1980), consolidated on appeal with, and affirmed sub nominee Plyler v. Doe. 457 U.S. 2AZ Q982) (denial of public school admission to undocumented alien children).
