The Original Houston Legal Foundation

This is a work in progress. In 1948, attorneys, judges, and bankers formed the Houston Legal Foundation, a charitable legal aid organization.

  1. Judge Joseph C. Hutcheson, Jr., U.S. Court of Appeals, 5th Circuit and ex-mayor of Houston (1917-1918)
  2. Paul Strong, City Attorney, Houston, TX
  3. H.F. Montgomery, Past President of the Houston Bar Association (1929)
  4. John H. Crooker, senior partner in Fulbright Jaworski (now Norton, Rose, Fulbright)
  5. J. Curtiss Brown, who would later serve as Chief Justice of the 14th court of appeals. A founding partner at Hill, Brown, Kronzer, and Abraham in Houston (now called Abraham, Watkins, Agosto, Aziz, Stogner)
  6. J. Toll Underwood, President of the Houston Young Lawyers Association
  7. O.R. Weyrich, President of Houston Bank & Trust
  8. Howard Spencer Hoover, attorney and founding partner, Hoover Slovacek.
  9. Allen S. Key, attorney, Humble Oil
  10. Elmer Hay, attorney, Hay, Kirk, and Baggett
  11. A.A. White, Dean of the newly established UH Law School, now called Houston Law Center
