HOUSTON, TX – Lone Star Legal Aid proudly announces that Litigation Director Amy Dinn has been honored with the Environmental Champion of 2024 Award by Better Brazoria, a long-time community partner based in Freeport, Texas.
The surprise award presentation took place on Wednesday, April 30, at LSLA’s Houston office, where Melanie Oldham from Better Brazoria joined LSLA to recognize Amy’s tireless advocacy and commitment to environmental justice in Brazoria County and beyond.
For years, Amy Dinn has provided legal guidance and support to Better Brazoria, empowering the community to address environmental concerns, ensure clean air and water, and protect public health.
One significant area of collaboration involved the proposed Texas GulfLink Deepwater Port project. On behalf of Better Brazoria and the Freeport community, LSLA submitted formal comments to federal agencies, highlighting potential environmental and public health impacts of the project. These efforts aimed to ensure that the concerns of Freeport residents were taken into account in the decision-making process.
Additionally, LSLA has supported Better Brazoria in engaging with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regarding air quality issues in Brazoria County. This includes submitting comments on proposed regulations and participating in public hearings to advocate for stricter pollution controls and greater transparency in environmental permitting.
“It gets very discouraging for our frontline community groups to not have legal advice or strategies,” shared Melanie Oldham. “Quite frankly, we would not have these wins. Amy Dinn, you are not only a great lawyer, but you have heart. I don’t know how many times Amy has driven all the way down to Freeport, Texas and Southern Brazoria county and met and talked with us, and asked us why we oppose it, how it is going to affect our communities. I can’t say thank you enough to Amy and your team for all the wins we have had.”
“Lone Star Legal Aid has been proud to partner with Better Brazoria for the last eight years in addressing community-led environmental concerns in Freeport,” shared Amy Dinn.
Lone Star Legal Aid congratulates Amy and the EJ Team on this well-deserved honor and extends heartfelt thanks to Better Brazoria for their trust, partnership, and recognition.
