Justice for All. Building Equity. Empowering Communities.

2024 Annual Report

Each year, Lone Star Legal Aid provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals and families across our service area in Texas and Arkansas. Our web-based annual report highlights how we’re turning that commitment into action—protecting housing, securing safety for survivors, preserving income and healthcare access, and standing with communities after disaster.

The 2024 theme—Justice for All. Building Equity. Empowering Communities. — reflects our ongoing mission to expand access to justice and uplift the people we serve. Through data, impact stories, and reflections from our leadership, explore how legal aid is transforming lives and strengthening communities every day.

But this work is only possible with the help of people like you. By giving your time as a volunteer or contributing as a donor, you can play a vital role in ensuring equal justice for all.

As we reflect on 2024, we are proud to share the transformative work made possible by your support. Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) continues its mission to protect and advance the rights of low-income Texans. This year, LSLA handled more than 25,111 cases benefitting legal services to more than 61,289 individuals. Your support empowers the ‘underdog’—families, veterans, seniors, and survivors—who face legal systems often stacked against them. With legal aid, everyday Texans do not just get legal help—they get justice.

LSLA’s work during 2024 reaffirmed and continued its essential role in upholding judicial responsibility and delivering real results for Texas families. As Chair, I am proud to witness the direct impact of legal aid—from assisting families impacted by our area’s 2024 severe weather events to restoring dignity to survivors of violence. LSLA remains committed to our mission and to the ‘underdog’—those who too often face systems alone. We thank our hard-working staff, funders, volunteers, and the communities who make justice possible.

The most effective way to prevent complicated heirship issues is for the homeowner to create a will and engage in proper estate planning. This ensures that their loved ones clearly understand who inherits the property, making the process smoother overall. If someone discovers they are an heir to an estate without a will, it is advisable to consult an attorney as soon as possible to avoid complications, such as a tax foreclosure lawsuit, which can arise if property taxes remain unpaid.

This is probably the most favorable settlement agreement I’ve obtained for a client. I worked hard to carefully craft language and terms that would be enforceable, protective, and beneficial for Laura and her son, not just now but for years to come. One of my primary goals as a litigator is to put clients in the best position possible so they don’t have to return to court for potential issues or future disputes. Laura was exceedingly grateful to Lone Star Legal Aid for our help throughout the process, especially for helping her finalize the case before the holidays. She and Samuel can now enjoy Christmas in peace and ring in the New Year with hope.

Our Board reflects the diversity and resilience of the communities we serve. Their guidance ensures that LSLA remains mission-focused and rooted in service to the public good.

Looking Ahead

In 2025, Lone Star Legal Aid continues its commitment to ensuring that all Texans—regardless of income, background, or ZIP code—have a fair chance to resolve civil legal issues that affect their safety, health, and financial stability.

Our priorities for the year ahead include:

  • Expanding rural access so families in every corner of our service area can reach help when they need it most.

  • Supporting veterans and older adults with legal solutions that protect dignity, independence, and peace of mind.

  • Leveraging technology for faster triage, more efficient case handling, and better outcomes for clients and courts alike.

  • Strengthening protections for survivors of violence through trauma-informed advocacy.

  • Promoting housing stability and economic security, especially in communities facing disasters or rising costs of living.

Promoting fairness in the civil justice system isn’t partisan—it’s a shared responsibility. But we cannot do it alone. With your support as a volunteer or donor, we can continue to meet urgent legal needs, protect vulnerable families, and strengthen communities across Texas.
