Are you facing eviction in Harris County? You might be able to get free legal help with your eviction. Our Eviction Right to Counsel Initiative, part of the Harris County Eviction Defense Coalition, helps people in all 16 Harris County Justice of the Peace courts.
In Harris County, our Eviction Right to Counsel Initiative is like a public defender’s office. If you meet certain financial requirements, we’ll do our best to represent you fully in eviction court, depending on our available resources. Since June 2020, our goal has been to be at eviction hearings all over Harris County to talk to tenants who might need our help right then and there. We try to let people know where we’ll be each week. Even if you don’t see your court listed, you can still ask for our help. It’s a good idea to come early, at least 30 minutes before your court time, to see if we can assist you. If you have a court date, don’t wait –call 361-35EVICT (3-8428) or text “APPLY” for our help as soon as you can.
The Eviction Defense Coalition includes Lone Star Legal Aid, Houston Volunteer Lawyers, South Texas College of Law Houston, Thurgood Marshall School of Law’s Earl Carl Institute, and the University of Houston Law Center. The ER2C’s mission is to provide an attorney to tenants facing eviction to represent them in court, rather than merely providing forms or self-help resources.
We are regularly present at courts that have an asterisk (*) next to their name because of our partnership with Harris County. But even if your court doesn’t have an asterisk, we’re still available to assist you. We provide support to people in all 16 courts.
