Q: What inspired you to work in legal aid and advocate for clients facing challenges related to opioid use disorders?

A: I was inspired to work in legal aid because I believe everyone deserves access to justice, regardless of their financial circumstances or personal challenges. Many individuals struggling with opioid use disorders face legal issues that are compounded by barriers such as stigma, poverty, and lack of access to resources. I wanted to be part of a team that helps clients navigate those challenges, protects their rights, and gives them an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Q: What is a moment in your work that reminded you why access to justice matters?

A: One of the most meaningful moments was helping a client overcome a legal obstacle that was preventing them from moving forward with their recovery and stability. Seeing the relief and hope they felt after receiving legal assistance reminded me that access to justice can truly change someone’s life. It reinforced that legal advocacy is about more than resolving cases, it’s about restoring dignity and creating opportunities.

Q: How does your work in this unit help address barriers that clients face?

A: Our work helps remove legal barriers that often prevent clients from achieving stability, whether those barriers involve housing, employment, benefits, or other civil legal issues. By addressing these challenges, we allow clients to focus on their recovery, their families, and building a better future. Legal representation provides them with both practical support and the confidence that someone is advocating for their rights.

Q: What’s a moment that reminded you that your work matters?

A: A client once expressed sincere gratitude after we helped resolve a legal issue that had caused them significant stress for a long time. Knowing that our work gave them peace of mind and a fresh start reminded me that even small legal victories can have a profound impact on a person’s life. Moments like that reaffirm why I chose public interest law.

A: My time at Lone Star Legal Aid has strengthened my understanding that effective advocacy requires both legal knowledge and compassion. I’ve learned the importance of listening carefully to clients, understanding the unique challenges they face, and approaching every case with empathy and professionalism. This experience has made me a stronger attorney and reinforced my commitment to serving vulnerable communities.
