A Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) trains medical staff to “issue spot” legal and social determinants of health (SDOH) by integrating legal expertise into clinical practice. The goal is to help providers recognize when a patient’s health issue may have a legal component and know how to refer them for legal support.

The MLP visited one of our newest clinic sites to deliver a presentation on Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA), introducing our services and mission to clinical staff. I also conducted a comprehensive MLP training, equipping providers with the knowledge and tools to identify legal issues impacting patients’ health and to effectively collaborate with our legal team.

Courses will be online via zoom and you must register to attend.

I provided training to new medical staff and residents on how to effectively screen and process referrals for the Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP). During these sessions, I explained the structure and goals of the MLP, walked through the referral workflow, and answered questions to ensure clarity and confidence in using the system. I also discussed the types of legal issues we commonly address such as housing instability, benefits access, and advance care planning and emphasized how timely referrals can help improve patient outcomes. My training aimed to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and highlight the value of integrating legal support into patient care.
